QCWA WILD ROSE REPEATER

December 1, 2002

In the last newsletter I mentioned how fast the summer went. In this newsletter I ask what happened to Fall? Seems like Mother Nature decided to leave the Fall of 2002 for another year, including our usual Indian summer! From what I have been told, in order for it to be deemed an Indian summer we must have at least 3 continuous days of 15c degrees after September 21. It never happened!

Again, a brief newsletter to inform every one of QCWA Chapter 151 happenings at this time. Memberships are still coming into the mailbox of new Secretary/Treasurer John Smith, VE6AI. At this time we would like to welcome our newest members and 'Friends' who have joined since the last newsletter.

Please welcome our new supporting members by way of being a 'Friend' - Niels Kristjansson, VA6NJ, Tom Kelly, VE6TDK and Dr. Bill Carpenter, VA6WBC. Bill Carpenter just recently acquired his Canadian amateur radio licence and Chapter 151 welcomes him to Ham radio in Canada! Bill is an old railroad telegrapher and also holds call sign NH7FB. He winters in Maui, HI 6 months of the year and spends the rest of the year in Calgary, AB.

As well, please welcome our first out of Province member Bob Roske, N0UF from Gladstone, MO, which is near Kansas City, MO. Bob has just recently volunteered to maintain the QCWA National Web Site, which can be found at QCWA National Headquarters, not to mention being volunteer Web Master for Chapter 35 and 120 Web Sites! Thank you Bob for your membership support!

ANNUAL DINNER MEETING

As everyone now knows, the Annual Dinner Meeting went off without a hitch on September 21, 2002 at # 264 Royal Canadian Legion - 1910 Kensington Road NW in Calgary. The meeting was a great success with 33 members, spouses and guests in attendance. John Smith, VE6AI won the 50/50 draw. With thanks, door prizes won were supplied by NTF Communications Inc. and Linda-Lou Oelke, VE6LGO.

Elections were held for the new Chapter 151 Executive who immediately took office for a one year term. Elected were Ken Oelke, VE6AFO for President and John Smith, VE6AI for Secretary/Treasurer. We thank outgoing Secretary/Treasurer Les Card, VE6CA for his tremendous work over the many years for Chapter 151.

The next Chapter 151 dinner meeting will likely be scheduled for early spring 2003. Details yet to be worked out - however this meeting will be held on a weekend during daylight hours - i.e. a luncheon. It is hopeful that this will help bring out as many members and spouses as possible.

QCWA WILD ROSE CHAPTER 151 WEBSITE

As mentioned in the last newsletter, the Web Site has a new URL and can be found at:

QCWA Chapter 151

The website will always be a 'work in progress' and those who can and wish to contribute and or assist, will be most welcomed! At this time there have been no offers to help out.

More pages have since been added and now include archived newsletters and meeting minutes as well as QCWA scholarship information. As time permits more past newsletters and minutes of Chapter 151 will be added. This is where we could use some help to re-type past minutes and newsletters.

Also - I would like to possibly include a bio and picture of each NEW member who joins Chapter 151, along with the current membership. Who will be the first to submit something?

QCWA WILD ROSE CHAPTER 151 NET

The QCWA Wild Rose Chapter 151 Net takes place every Monday evening on 3747 kHz at 7:00 pm MST (0200z). For the winter months then, this is right after the Alberta Public Service Net which runs daily on 3740 kHz at 0130 Z. At this time the Net requires people who would like to do Net Control duties, which I might mention is very informal, to help put the Net into action. The Net can be used for announcing meetings, other happenings, Silent Keys, news of sick or hospitalized Chapter members or any other Amateurs. If you are interested in becoming a Net Control station let the Chapter Executive know and we will provide you with a Net Preamble.

CHAPTER 151 QCWA JOURNAL REPORT

Chapter 151 Report was in the Fall 2002 QCWA Journal, along with a picture. This is the first time in some years a report for Chapter 151 has been submitted to QCWA National for inclusion in the Journal. We hope to keep up with Chapter reports in the future. Another Chapter 151 Report was recently submitted and should appear in the Spring 2003 edition. Watch for it!

CALGARY CLUBS' FLEAMARKET - A GREAT SUCCESS!

The fleamarket held on October 26, 2002, in Calgary, was a tremendous success with approximately 275 - 300 in attendance. A Silent Auction took place at the QCWA Chapter 151 booth for a Cushcraft 3 element 20 metre mono-bander that was kindly donated to the Chapter by Dr. Rick Zabrodski, VE6GK. Although bidding was slow - the beam did raise $201.00 for the Chapter's coffers. Thank you Dr. Rick for your generosity. Much appreciated!

LETTER FROM NEWLY ELECTED QCWA NATIONAL PRESIDENT

A letter from QCWA National President Croft Taylor, VE3CT was received on October 12, 2002. His letter came about after we had a few exchanges about issuing a RAC bulletin of him being the first ever Canadian president to be elected and to possibly have an article in Radio Amateurs of Canada magazine - The Canadian Amateur - (TCA) regarding information about QCWA in general. Watch for this article to be possibly published in the January/February issue of TCA. Croft's closing words are as follows;

"Two of the more successful Conventions were held in Canada in recent years (Ottawa and Toronto). Last year we sponsored a highly successful Cruise Convention from Ft. Lauderdale, and we are considering an Alaska Cruise within 2 or 3 years. We would surely like to see a future Convention take place in Calgary hosted by Chapter 151. We have a Convention manual which can be made available, and we would be prepared to assist in any way we can. I am sure a Calgary venue would attract many USA Amateurs.

If you need any further info Ken, please call at any time, 73 and kindest regards to all,"

Croft Taylor VE3CT

So there you have it. Now you know what QCWA National thinks of our Chapter. Is Chapter 151 up to the challenge? We do have the expertise amongst our members - with or without a Convention manual!

CHAPTER 151 MEMORBILLIA

We have now received from former Secretary Bruce Collisson, VE6BAC, the Photo Album as was started by the late Bill Savage, VE6EO - a Wild Rose Chapter 151 Charter Member. Since Bill started this album, it is then fitting that we profile him first. This is the picture and what is written in the album.

V E 6 E O

Radio has been my #1 hobby and in 1923 tried a ford spark coil xmitter. My first license was a Radio Receiver license in 1925. My Ham Radio started in 1930 with a temporary license of VE4EO and in 1931 received the official license. In 1932 started the S.A.A.R.C. and was elected President which I held for 4 years. In 1946 as VE6EO I was appointed by the A.R.R.L. as VE6 QSL Manager and held that post for 18 years. In 1953 a business trip for the City of Lethbridge took me to Columbus Ohio and Hartford Conn., where I contacted John Huntoon W1LVQ. He gave me a tour of the offices and station of W1AW. 1956 was a big year as I was made Honary Member of C.A.R.A. after presenting Byron Goodman W1DX with a Calgary Stetson for C.A.R.A. This year I was elected Canadian Vice Director of A.R.R.L. a position I held for 4 years. 1973 -76 I was elected as Assistant Director for C.R.R.L. 1984 organized the Wild Rose chapter 151 of Q.C.W.A. for Alberta and was President for 6 years and was presented with a Certificate of merit and Life Membership. 1989 was a highlight as Gus VE6GUS and I went to Calgary to meet King Hussein, JY1. We were allowed to shake hands with him and have a word or two then talked to him on his Jet plane going to England. 1989 President of Chapter 104 Q.C.W.A. In 1992 the S.A.A.R.C. had been in operation for 60 years and the club presented me with a Life Membership Plaque which was appreciated very much. 73s

The above profile is the same idea we earlier mentioned in where we would further like to profile our present members who are not profiled in this album, along with the recent members who have joined the chapter.

Until next time...on behalf of the QCWA Chapter 151 Executive,

73

Ken Oelke, VE6AFO - President

John Smith, VE6AI - Secretary/Treasurer
