QCWA Alberta Wild Rose Chapter 151 Quarterly Report
Chapter 151 held its spring lunch meeting on April 26, 2008, at the Tuxedo Park Community Hall. A moment of silence was held for Silent Keys, remembering especially Ernie Barnes, VE6DX. Chapter President, Ken Oelke (VE6AFO) reported that the Chapter is doing well and continues to welcome new members. The Chapter currently has 37 Full Members and 14 Friends, for a total of 51 members and friends.
Chapter 151 has been informed that their assistance (set up and operate the radio equipment) will be again be required for 2 more Amateur Radio International Space Station (ARISS) school contacts sometime in 2009. This will make a total of 4 ARISS school contacts that our chapter will have completed since the first one in December 2005.
During the meeting, the following long service awards were presented:
Earle Smith (VE6NM) QCWA Century Club Award and Dave Watson (VE6EH) 55 Year Licensed Award.

Other members receiving Long-Service and other Awards were:
Bruce Collisson (VE6BAC) QCWA Century Club Award and 55 Year Licensed Award, Leslie Kawamura (VE6ET) 50 and 55 Year Licensed Award, Ed Frazer (VE7EF) 55 Year Licensed Award, Allen McNeil (VA7QQ) 50 Year Licensed Award and Jack Ambler (VE6CAQ) Meritorious Award.
Following the meeting, a presentation on the University of Calgary Solar Car was made by solar car team members Jason Workman (VA6JCW), Shawn Zwierzchowski (VA6SBZ) and Scott Nesbitt (VE6SJN).
The solar car team participated in the Australian Solar Car Challenge, a 3000km race from Darwin to Adelaide. Challenges included an accident during the track practices that left the car missing 25% of its solar array. During the race itself, the team experienced road-side bush fires, cloudy weather, two flat tires, and intermittent electrical faults. Despite these challenges, the team managed in finishing 8th in the Challenge Class, and place 1st of the Canadian teams.
The team will be participating in the North American Solar Challenge, which takes place in July. The race starts in Texas and is expected to finish in Calgary on July 23rd.
The next meeting of Chapter 151 is scheduled for September 27, 2008.
