QCWA Alberta Wild Rose Chapter 151 Quarterly Report

QCWA Wild Rose Chapter 151 had its fall luncheon meeting on September 26, 2013. The meeting began with a moment of silence for Silent Keys, including Norm Sproule (VE6AQH). Norm was a steadfast contributor to amateur radio and had also been the secretary of CARATELS for many years. He will be missed. The members also acknowledged amateur operators who have been hospitalized or are homebound.

Chapter President, Ken Oelke (VE6AFO), reported that Tony Mountjoy (VE6MX) had earned his 60-year award and will receive it at the next meeting. Ken also reported that since April, he has presided over the QCWA booth at the Dayton Hamvention, the Glacier-Waterton International Hamfest and the Red Deer Picnic. As well, Secretary Mitch Goodjohn, VE6SM, presides over the QCWA Chapter 151 booth at two local flea markets in Calgary, one in the spring and the other in the fall. The latest flea market was on October 5, 2013.

The following Chapter members continue to help with the Morse code exhibit at the Military Museum: Larry Chapple (VE6KC), Ken Oelke (VE6AFO), Linda-Lou Oelke (VE6LGO), Dave Watson (VE6EH), Terry Finn (VE6TF) and Dave Craig (VE6DKC). Members also discussed the possibility of hosting a joint presentation on amateur radio along with one of the local Calgary amateur radio clubs, or helping to ELMER new hams.

Elections were held for the Chapter 151 Executive and the following people were elected:

President – Ken Oelke (VE6AFO)
Vice President – Bernie Feisst (VE6WIN)
Secretary – Mitch Goodjohn (VE6SM)
Treasurer – Dave Craig (VE6DKC)

Following the meeting, members watched an informative and enjoyable video presentation on George Johnson, "Photographer and the Tlingit People". The Tlingit are indigenous people of the Pacific Northwest Coast. George Johnson, a member of the Tlingit people, was born in 1894. At a young age he sent away for a camera and developing kit from the Eaton’s catalogue and went on to become a famous photographer of the north. He took pictures of what he called the ‘Golden Times’ of his people.

QCWA Wild Rose Chapter 151's 30th anniversary will be on May 18th, 2014. The Executive will be discussing plans to celebrate this milestone in Chapter 151's history in lieu of our spring meeting.
